HOW TO EMBODY YOUR POWER

As a child, I was pulled in by the structure, the rigour and attention to detail (which ironically are not my natural tendencies).

DESIREE DUNBAR BY GREG EHLERS | COURTESY DANCERS DANCING

In the process of witnessing the dance journey of so many as an educator I learned that dance is medicine.

This whole-being pursuit of the body, mind, spirit and soul, requires such incredible focus and integration of all parts of yourself that absolutely no worry or fear may be allowed to exist while in movement.

The medicine not only heals our mind and strengthens our body but it connects us to true power. Because of the dance, we are empowered.

The repressed and suppressed feelings are encouraged to rise up and flow out the toes, fingertips and whole body, whole soul.

The dancer knows how to let go.

The dancer knows what power is.

We all have this capability, not just the most lithe and limber. I promise. I've seen all shapes and sizes from recently divorced dads to 94 year-young Ida with dementia take the medicine and experience more joy.

If you are a dance educator, you have the opportunity to facilitate rapid personal change. It's needed.

Learn what power is for you through this inquiry exercise

1. What is power to you?

2. How do you give your power away?

3. How can you reclaim it?
